Women's History
Women’s history is an area of academia focusing on women’s place in history and historical events which have been of significant importance to women. Women’s history places a great deal of focus upon the struggle for women’s rights and the numerous events which have shaped the movement. For example the women’s suffrage movement is of significant importance to women’s history, as it was fundamental in brining to light the lack of rights imposed on many women by society.
There are a number of resources available for those who are interested in find out more about women’s history. Most libraries will have an extensive section of books dealing with women’s history. There are also many online resources, and online academic journals documenting many aspects of women’s history. The Women’s Library in London is an indispensible resource for those interested in reading up on women’s history as it contains over 60,000 books, articles and journals, all relevant to women’s history.
Many universities and other higher education institutes across the world now run courses for the study of Women’s history. Many existing courses, particularly those which are concerned with human rights movements are likely to heavily feature modules centred on women’s history.
Women’s history is still very relevant today, although the events in women’s history that most people are aware of took place in the early 20th century. There are many prominent feminists such as Germaine Greer who publish numerous books and articles concerning women’s history.
