Suffrage Movement

The Women’s suffrage movement describes the various social and political reforms focusing on allowing women the right to vote that have occurred since the first women’s suffrage movement came to light in France during the late 18th Century.

 

The Women’s suffrage movement gained particular notoriety in Britain during the early 20th Century when a militant group known as the Suffragettes stage many protests and terrorist actions to draw attention to the suffrage movement. One particularly well known member of the suffragettes was Emily Davison who was involved in many controversial actions to raise public awareness of for the suffrage movement. She was famously killed in 1913 when she ran in front of King George V’s racehorse at the Epsom derby, many people believe that she was attempting to attach a banner bearing the logo of the suffrage movement to the horse.  She was immortalised as an important part of the women’s suffrage movement when she was depicted on the front page of The Suffragette the newspaper of the suffrage movement published by Christabel Pankhurst, another notorious suffragette.

 

The Suffrage movement is one of the most significant events in Women’s history and numerous books have been written on the topic.
